BBC One’s Ethel & Ernest adaptation will premiere on Wednesday December 28th at 7:30pm, it has been announced.
Based on the novel by Raymond Briggs, Ethel & Ernest tells the story of Briggs’ own parents, Ethel and Ernest – two ordinary Londoners living through a period of extraordinary events and immense social change.
From their chance meeting in the 1920s, to the birth of Raymond and beyond, we see some of the most defining moments of the 20th Century through their eyes: the darkness of the Great Depression to the build up to World War II, the Blitz to VE Day and the emergence of a generation from post-war austerity to the cultural enlightenment of the 1960s.
The feature-length animated film is produced by Lupus Films in association with Ethel & Ernest Productions, Melusine Productions and Cloth Cat Animation and supported by the BFI, BBC, Film Fund Luxembourg, Ffilm Cymru Wales and the Welsh Government. The voice cast includes Jim Broadbent, Brenda Blethyn, Luke Treadaway, Virginia McKenna. Pam Ferris, June Brown. Simon Day, Roger Allam and child actor Harry Collett. Roger Mainwood is the director.
