Suspects is the latest UK originated drama format to travel.
German broadcaster RTL has commissioned a local adaptation of the format, which was originally devised by FremantleMedia UK’s Newman Street Managing Director Paul Marquess for Channel 5, TVWise has learned.
Suspects is described as a fresh and original fly-on-the-wall style crime series in which the cast devise their own dialogue based on a detailed plot description. The gripping and fast-paced drama focuses on a team of determined detectives and each episode tells a self-contained crime story and follows the detectives as they aim to solve the cases.
The original UK series was produced by FremantleMedia UK’s Newman Street and featured a cast that includes Fay Ripley, Damien Molony, Clare-Hope Ashitey, Lenora Crichlow, Perry Fitzpatrick and James Murray. It was first green-lit by Channel 5 in 2013 as they were looking at re-entering the original drama space and has since produced some five seasons. The new German remake, which will feature a local cast, will be produced by UFA Serial Drama.
“Suspects is unlike any other drama out there at the moment. I’m a huge fan of the UK original: it combines the realism of documentary filming with great dramatic tension; intense action sequences with compelling storylines”, said Guido Reinhardt, Executive Producer for UFA Serial Drama, “It’s an extraordinary piece of work and I can’t wait to introduce a local version to German audiences.”
