Sir Michael Gambon (Harry Potter, The Casual Vacancy) has signed on for a co-starring role opposite Peaky Blinders and Skyfall star Helen McCrory in ITV’s legal thriller Fearless, which hails from Homeland writer & executive producer Patrick Harbinson and Poldark indie Mammoth Screen, TVWise has learned.
Fearless follows Emma Banville (McCrory) a solicitor known for defending lost causes. She’s investigating the killing of a schoolgirl in East Anglia and trying to free the man she thinks was wrongly convicted of the girl’s murder. However, as she digs ever deeper into the case, she begins to sense powerful forces, in the police and the intelligence services at home and abroad, who want to stop her uncovering the truth.
Gambon will play Sir Alastair McKinnon, a Cambridge Master. The actor, repped by Independent Talent here in the UK, previously top-lined one-off drama Churchill’s Secret for ITV, which aired earlier this year. His other notable TV credits include Page Eight, Lucan and Fortitude. He also recently filmed a guest part on BBC One’s The Hollow Crown and co-stars opposite Gillian Anderson in feature film Viceroy’s House.
Rounding out the cast of Fearless is Jamie Bamber (Battlestar Galactica, Marcella), Wunmi Mosaku (Dancing On The Edge, Our Loved Boy), Robin Weigert (Marvel’s Jessica Jones), Jonathan Forbes (Catastrophe), Christine Bottomley (In The Club), Rebecca Callard (Ordinary Lies), Emma Hamilton (Mr Selfridge), Kika Markham (Secret State), Jack Shepherd (The Politician’s Husband), Sam Swainsbury (Mum) and Rick Warden (Happy Valley).
“Michael Gambon is a legend, one of the UK’s finest actors, and it’s a real thrill for us that he will be joining the brilliant Helen McCrory in Fearless”, Mammoth Screen Managing Director Damien Timmer said in a statement. “The range and depth of the cast that director Pete Travis has assembled is testament to Patrick Harbinson’s wonderful scripts, following Emma Banville as she risks everything in her quest for the truth.”
Originally commissioned last month, the six-parter is being penned by Harbinson and is set up at Mammoth Screen, the indie who are also behind ITV’s Sunday night hit period drama Victoria. Adrian Sturges is the series producer, while Dredd helmer Pete Travis is attached to direct. Mammoth Screen’s Creative Director Rebecca Keane developed the project. Patrick Harbinson, Damien Timmer and Tom Mullens serve as executive producers. Production is now underway in London and East Anglia for a 2017 premiere.
