UKTV’s flagship channel W is continuing their originals push with two new documentary series: Dancing For The Weekend, from Sony’s Electric Ray; and The Dressing Room, which hails from STV Productions and GroupM Entertainment. Both series have received six episode orders.
Dancing For The Weekend explores the lives of people who moonlight as amateur dancers and live for the thrill of weekend competitions. The six episode series was ordered by W General Manager Steve North and UKTV’s Director of Commissioning Richard Watsham. The executive producers are UKTV’s Helen Nightingale and Electric Ray’s Meredith Chambers.
Fixed-rig series The Dressing Room delves into the world of amateur weekend sport and goes into the dressing rooms across the country, exploring all of the off-field drama and focusing on dynamic characters with fascinating lives. The series focusses on a cast of women’s teams, mixed teams and men’s teams, from football to roller derby to water polo. The Dressing Room was ordered by W General Manager Steve North and UKTV’s Director of Commissioning Richard Watsham.
These two commissions comes as UKTV is heavily investing in original programming for W, which rebranded from Watch earlier this year, targeted at a predominantly female audience. That investment has already seen the channel commission and air an authored documentary season from Sara Cox, Grace Dent & Sophie Ellis-Bextor; Nev’s Indian Call Centre; Get Me To The Church; and Battlechefs; Other such commissions in the pipeline include John Bishop: In Conversation With…, Inside The Ambulance and I’ve Got Something To Tell You.
“W is evolving quickly as a channel and so too is our strategy for UKTV Originals. With huge talents like Amanda Holden and John Bishop on board, and more big names to come, we’ve targeted intelligent, warm and revealing factual series to compliment them”, said UKTV’s Director of Commissioning Richard Watsham. “The sheer joy and vitality that comes across from seeing our characters’ passions writ large make these modern doc series a perfect fit for our growing audience on W. Both The Dressing Room and Dancing for the Weekend will be strong partners for our existing W commission, mobile fixed rig show, Inside The Ambulance, which has just finished filming”.
