Starz’s American Gods adaptation has found a UK home.
Amazon Prime Video has secured the exclusive UK rights to the series after striking a deal with FremantleMedia International, TVWise has learned. The streaming service has also acquired rights to American Gods in Austria, Germany and Japan.
With this deal, American Gods joins a slate of exclusive series at Amazon Prime Video UK that includes Steven Soderbergh’s The Girlfriend Experience, CBS comedy series Life In Pieces, JJ Abrams and Cameron Crowe’s Showtime comedy Roadies, AMC’s Preacher, USA Network’s Mr. Robot, Starz’s Outlander, AMC’s Halt & Catch Fire and Fox’s Lucifer.
“Adapted from Neil Gaiman’s beloved novel, American Gods is one of the most ambitious new television series coming out in 2017”, said Brad Beale, Vice President of Worldwide Television Acquisition for Amazon. “It joins our roster of exciting, high-quality Original and exclusive shows for our Prime members including, this year, the highly anticipated The Grand Tour, Mr. Robot, Preacher, Lucifer and the return of The Man in the High Castle.”
American Gods tells the story of a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of biblical and mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.
The ten episode series features an all-star cast that includes, amongst others, Ricky Whittle (The 100, Austenland) as Shadow Moon, Ian McShane (Deadwood, Pirates of the Caribbean) as Mr. Wednesday, Emily Browning (Sucker Punch, Legend) as Laura Moon, Gillian Anderson (The X-Files, The Fall) as Media, Pablo Schreiber (13 Hours, Orange Is the New Black) as Mad Sweeney, Yetide Badaki (Aquarius, Masters of Sex) as Bilquis and Kristin Chenoweth (The West Wing, Pushing Daisies) as Easter.
American Gods, which is based on the novel of the same name by Neil Gaiman, is being produced for Starz by FremantleMedia North America. Bryan Fuller, who is also working on CBS All Access’ Star Trek series, penned the scripts for the series alongside Michael Green. The duo also serve as co-showrunners on the fantasy series and will executive produce alongside original author Neil Gaiman. Production on American Gods is presently underway in Toronto for a 2017 premiere.
