Stefanie Martini To Play Young Jane Tennison In ITV’s ‘Prime Suspect’ Prequel Series

Stefanie MartiniAfter a months long search, ITV has found the lead actress for their Prime Suspect prequel series Tennison.

Stefanie Martini, who is coming off of a starring role in NBC’s upcoming The Wizard Of Oz series Emerald City, will take on the part of a Jane Tennison – the role played by Dame Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect between 1991 and 2006. Martini’s previous credits include Doctor Thorne and Endeavour.

Tennison is set in 1970s Hackney and follows 22 year old Jane Tennison, a probationary officer with the Metropolitan Police Service in London. The series will reveal why she became such a complex and formidable character in the Metropolitan Police. In her early years, the character is described as being “single-minded and ambitious” in a world where high-ranking police officers were notoriously chauvinistic, and the rules and regulations often bent.

Lex ShrapnelRounding out the cast of Tennison is Sam Reid (The Riot Club) as DCI Len Bradfield; Blake Harrison (The Inbetweeners) as DS Spencer Gibbs; Alun Armstrong (New Tricks) as Clifford Bentley; Ruth Sheen (Unforgotten) as Renee Bentley; Lex Shrapnel (Hunted) as David Bentley; Jessica Gunning (Fortitude) as WPC Kath Morgan; Andrew Brooke (Da Vinci’s Demons) as Sergeant Harris; Nick Sidi (DCI Banks) as Andrew Tennison; Geraldine Somerville (New Tricks) and Joyce Tennison. Rosie Day (Outlander) plays Jane’s sister Pam. Joshua Hill (Vera), Daniel Ezra (Prey), Tommy McDonnell (Glue) and Jordan Long (Unforgotten) also star.

The six part series, which follows to publication of a Tennison novel, hails from Prime Suspect creator Lynda La Plante, who is penning the scripts. Tennison is set up at La Plante’s La Plante Global, who are co-producing the drama alongside Noho Film & Television, and was commissioned by ITV more than a year ago. Rhonda Smith is the series producer, while David Caffrey is attached to direct. The executive producers are Lynda La Plante, Camilla Campbell and Robert Wulff-Cochrane. Production on Tennison is now underway in London. ITV Studios Global Entertainment will handle international distribution.
