A mere two episodes into the show’s second season, HBO has renewed their Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson fronted comedy series Ballers for a third run.
“Dwayne Johnson, Stephen Levinson, Mark Wahlberg and the rest of the Ballers team have once again delivered a winner for our viewers,” said Casey Bloys, President of HBO Programming. “We look forward to another great season of Ballers next year.”
HBO had been expected to pick-up a third season of the comedy series, which returned to strong ratings on July 17th. With only preliminary data available, the season two premiere has already amassed an audience of 5.7 million viewers. The show’s first season broke a ratings record to become the network’s highest rated comedy series in six years with an average audience of 9.1 million viewers.
Arguably, HBO has had more success on the half-hour comedy side of late. While they have struggled to launch a successful new drama series since Game Of Thrones in 2011, the network has churned out a number of hit comedies in that time. Ballers joins a successful comedy slate that includes Veep, Silicon Valley and Vice Principals. They also have a number of new half-hour comedies in the pipeline, including the Sarah Jessica Parker fronted Divorce and Issa Rae’s Insecure.
