Hulu has taken the exclusive SVOD rights to the recent Roots reboot after striking a wide-ranging deal with A+E Networks, the two companies announced on Tuesday. Roots will be available to stream on Hulu later this year.
The deal, which greatly expands the existing relationship between Hulu and A+E, gives the streaming service exclusive rights to the BBC mini War & Peace (A+E distributes in the US) and History’s newest scripted effort, docu-drama Barbarian’s Rising. Hulu is already the exclusive SVOD home to Lfetime’s drama series UnREAL.
“We’re so proud to welcome such a culturally important and highly-rated series as Roots to Hulu,” said Craig Erwich, Senior Vice-President and Head of Content for Hulu. “With acclaimed titles like War and Peace and Barbarians Rising, our expanded deal with A+E Networks furthers our strategy of offering the very best in premium, exclusive television to Hulu subscribers.”
While Sean Cohan, President of International and Digital Media for A+E Networks added: “A+E Networks is thrilled to partner with Hulu to offer their subscribers such a strong slate of programming. Hulu continues to thrive and innovate in the SVOD marketplace and is the perfect platform to showcase A+E’s premium video content.”
