EXCLUSIVE: Former Atlantis star Robert Emms remains very much in demand at the BBC. The actor has been tapped for a role in The Living And The Dead, BBC One’s supernatural thriller from Life On Mars and Eternal Law creators Ashley Pharoah and Matthew Graham.
Robert Emms is the latest addition to a cast which is being led by Colin Morgan (Merlin, The Fall) & Charlotte Spencer (Glue, Line Of Duty) and also includes Steve Oram (Glue) and Ben Fox (The 7.39). Emms was a series regular on both seasons BBC One’s Saturday night fantasy series Atlantis, and most recently had a co-starring rol in three-part drama Capital, which is set to premiere November 24th at 9pm.
The Living And The Dead is set in Somerset, England, in 1894 and tells the story of Nathan Appleby (Colin Morgan) and Charlotte Appleby (Charlotte Spencer), who inherit a farm that’s almost as old as the English countryside itself and are determined to start a new life together. But their presence in this isolated corner of England starts to unleash strange, unsettling and dangerous supernatural phenomena that will start to threaten their marriage.
The series hails from Ashley Pharoah and Matthew Graham, who previously collaborated on such dramas as Eternal Law, Ashes To Ashes and Life On Mars. The Living And The Dead is being produced by BBC Wales Drama production in association with Monastic Productions and BBC America. The executive producers are Ashley Pharoah, Matthew Graham, Faith Penhale and Katie McAleese for BBC Wales Drama Production. Eliza Mellor is the series producer, while Alice Troughton is attached to direct.
Elsewhere at the BBC, Anthony Horowitz’s newest series New Blood, from indie Eleventh Hour Films, has also added to its cast. Danny Kirrane, best known for his turns on the Sky1 original series Trollied and Critical, has signed on for a role in the crime drama. He will play Steve Mullen.
Kirrane joins a cast that includes Mark Strepan (The Mill), Ben Tavassoli (No Offence), Mark Addy (Atlantis, Game Of Thrones) and Anna Chancellor (Fleming, Mapp & Lucia), Ariyon Bakare (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Dancing on the Edge), Kimberley Nixon (Critical, Fresh Meat), Mark Bonnar (Line of Duty, Shetland) Aiysha Hart (Atlantis, Line Of Duty) and Dorian Lough (Peaky Blinders, The Smoke)
New Blood tells the story of two young police investigators, Stefan (Mark Strepan) and Rash (Ben Tavassoli), who work for two different law enforcement divisions and are suddenly brought together by two seemingly unrelated cases. They soon find themselves coming up against the uber rich and powerful who hide behind legitimate facades and are guarded by lawyers.
Foyle’s War creator Anthony Horowitz created New Blood, which is his first series for the BBC since Murder In Mind in the early 2000s and “sets out to show a unique side of modern London, through the eyes of two outsiders”. Independent production company Eleventh Hour Films is producing, with Horowitz, Jill Green and Matthew Read serving as executive producers. Eve Gutierrez is the series producer, while Anthony Philipson is attached to direct. Production on the series is now underway for a 2016 premiere.
