Paul Nicholls (Law & Order: UK, Death In Paradise), Sandra Huggett (The Scandalous Lady W, In The Flesh), Andrew Buckley (Shameless, Wallander) and Gemma Dobson have joined the cast of Kay Mellor’s BBC One series In The Club for its upcoming six episode second season, TVWise has learned.
“Kay has once again created fantastic characters and stories which have, of course, attracted an enormously talented and stellar ensemble cast”, said Liz Kilgarriff, Independent Commissioning Editor for BBC Drama. “In the Club captures the extraordinary drama that can happen to ordinary people in everyday life and the series is set to be yet another treat for our BBC One audience.”
In The Club follows various couples, who’ve bonded at the local Parent Craft class in the last trimester of their pregnancies. This seemingly straightforward antenatal group reveals secrets and lies bubbling beneath the surface that threaten each of the new families. Each of the couples has their own unique issues to deal with, be it swollen feet, chronic wind or Braxton Hicks alongside debt, divorce and even death.
Paul Nicholls has been cast as Nathan, who along with his gay partner Andrew (Andrew Buckley) are expecting their first child thanks to a surrogate. Gemma Dobson will play Shelly, the surrogate who thinks it’s the perfect way to make some easy money, bit her mother Maxine (Sandra Huggett) – who works for Andrew and Nathan – is not quite so sure.
They join returning cast members Hermione Norris (Spooks), Tara Fitzgerald (Game Of Thrones), Jill Halfpenny (Humans), Katherine Parkinson (The Honourable Woman), Will Mellor (Broadchurch), Jonathan Kerrigan (Emmerdale), Christine Bottomley (DCI Banks), Luke Thompson (The Suspicions Of Mr Whicher), Taj Atwal (Stella), Sacha Dhawan (24: Live Another Day) and Hannah Midgley (Emmerdale).
The show’s second season picks up ten months after season one and follows the couples as they continue their journeys into parenthood. Roanna attempts to hide her past from Simon; Kim’s love life remains complicated as ever as she struggles to be the perfect mum to baby Emily; Diane is learning to cope on her own while Rick is still in prison; things have gotten tougher for Jasmin and Dev after he left baby Amber in the van; Vicky is struggling being a mother while holding a full time job; and Rosie and Jude have to cope with having no money.
The Syndicate scribe Kay Mellor created In The Club and penned the scripts for the show’s second season, which was commissioned by BBC One Controller Charlotte Moore and the BBC’s Controller of Drama Commissioning Poly Hill. Mellor’s Rollem Productions are producing, with Kay Mellor, Yvonne Francas and Liz Kilgarriff serving as the executive producers. Rebecca Davies is the co-producer. Kay Mellor, Jane Prowse and Audrey Cooke are attached to direct. Production is now underway on the show’s second season, with BBC One eyeing a 2016 premiere.
