Amazon Prime Instant Video UK has ordered their first original drama series.
The UK arm of the streaming service has given the green-light to The Collection, an eight episode period drama set in the world of French haute couture just after the Second World War, which hails from Oliver Goldstick, War & Peace indie Lookout Point and BBC Worldwide, TVWise has learned.
The Collection tells the story of an illustrious Paris fashion house, emerging from the dark days of the Occupation, now ushering in a new golden age of design and business. This gripping family saga, centred on two very different brothers, exposes the grit behind the glamour and the treachery beneath the trappings of this empire, and all who work there.
Oliver Goldstick, whose numerous TV credits include Ugly Betty and Pretty Little Liars, created the series, is penning the scripts and will serve as executive producer alongside Anne Thomopoulos and Kate Croft. Amazon, Lookout Point and BBC Worldwide has lined up a world-renowned creative team for the series, including Penny Dreadful helmer Dearbhla Walsh, BAFTA award-winning producer Selwyn Roberts, production designer Alison Dominitz, costume designers Chattoune & Fab and casting director Rachel Freck.
“I’m thrilled to be working with this fantastic team. The Collection has been a passion project of mine for years; an entrepreneurial fable set in a pivotal moment in history, where fashion served as the ultimate vehicle for transformation and re-invention”, said series creator and showrunner Oliver Goldstick. “It’s the story of a war-scarred family – upstairs and downstairs — tethered together by its success and its secrets.”
The Collection will only be available to stream on Amazon UK, with BBC Worldwide handling global sales for all other territories, including the United States. While this marks Amazon’s first ever original UK drama series, they are not entirely new players when its comes to British drama. The streaming service famously revived the Victorian-era cop drama Ripper Street after it was cancelled by the BBC and they have since gone on to renew it for a fourth and fifth season.
“We’re delighted to be bringing such a smart, sophisticated period piece to Amazon Prime members in the UK,” said Amazon UK’s Chris Bird. “We aim to bring our customers the best international TV has to offer, and we’re sure our members will enjoy this window into the seemingly glamourous world of Parisian haute couture, perhaps hiding a more sinister undercurrent.”
“The project marks another dynamic shift in the way that drama is being created and produced globally”, added Liam Keelan, Director of Scripted for BBC Worldwide. “The Collection epitomises the kind of exciting creative opportunities and business models now emerging, in particular from our strategic relationship with Lookout Point. But above all, its attraction is an outstanding script with amazing talent attached”.
