ABC is extending the run of four of their hit comedies. The network has ordered an additional two episodes for The Middle, The Goldbergs, Fresh Off The Boat and Black-ish, TVWise has confirmed. Each of the four series will now produce 24 episodes this season.
All four series are solid performers for ABC. Fresh Off The Boat has been performing well as part of the network’s struggling Tuesday night block and will be anchoring the night in the 8pm time-slot as of midseason. The Middle, The Goldbergs and Black-ish meanwhile are amongst the networks highest rated series, with each hovering around 7 million viewers/2.0 A18-49 rating in live+same day delivery.
The network has something of a track record in expanding the run of their biggest comedy series beyond the typical 22 episode orders most shows receive. Last season, they upped the order for both Black-ish and The Goldbergs, while The Middle has been producing 24 episode seasons since it launched in 2009. For Fresh Off The Boat, this represents the second order increase this season, after ABC previously picked up a full season in October.
In a departure from the norm, Modern Family has yet to receive a pick up for additional episodes and at present only has an order for the standard 22 episodes. ABC is expected to formally pull the trigger on the additional order shortly, especially as Modern Family is the highest rated series on the network’s Wednesday night comedy block. Talks with Modern Family studio 20th Century Fox Television for an order increase are on-going.
