BBC One and Magic Light Pictures have released the first image of their upcoming adaptation of Stick Man, based on the kids book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, which features the voices of Martin Freeman and Hugh Bonnveville and is set to air this Christmas.

Stick Man tells the story of the eponymous character who lives in the family tree with his Stick Lady Love and their stick children three. The story follows Stick Man as he goes an epic adventure across the seasons and is taken further and further from home, as he runs from a playful dog, gets thrown in a river, escapes from a swan’s nest and even ends up on top of a fire. Will he get back to his family in time for Christmas?

The just announced half-hour special features an all star cast which includes Martin Freeman (Sherlock), Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey), Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous), Russell Tovey (Looking), Rob Brydon (Gavin & Stacey) and Sally Hawkins (The Hollow Crown) lending their voices to the production. Martin Freeman is playing Stick Man, while Hugh Bonneville has been set as Santa and Jennifer Saunders will voice the Narrator.

Stick Man is the fourth animated adaptation of a Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler kids book that Magic Light Pictures has produced for the BBC in recent years; following in the footsteps of The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo’s Child and, most recently Room On The Broom. The special was acquired for the BBC by Controller of Drama Poly Hill and directed by Jeroen Jaspaert. Daniel Snaddon is the co-director, while Michael Rose and Martin Pope serve as the producers.
