Less than a week before the show’s fourth season finale, ABC Family – which is set to re-brand as Freeform early next year – has renewed Switched At Birth for a fifth season. In keeping with their MO the network has not specified the size of the episode order, but season five is expected to consist of at least 20 episodes.
“Every season ’Switched at Birth’ continues to deliver fresh, relatable storylines that tackle important social issues, reflecting what our audience experiences daily,” said Karey Burke, Executive Vice President of Programming and Development for ABC Family. “We’re excited to see where Lizzy will take these characters next.”
Switched At Birth tells the story of two teenage girls who discover they were accidentally switched as newborns in the hospital. Despite overwhelming socio-economic and ethnic differences, both families must learn to co-exist as parents and blend their lives into one for the sake of their daughters.
The series is produced in-house and stars Katie Leclerc, Vanessa Marano, Constance Marie, D.W. Moffett, Lea Thompson, Lucas Grabeel, Sean Berdy and Marlee Matlin. The executive producers are Lizzy Weiss (Blue Crush), Linda Gase (Army Wives) and Paul Stupin (Dawson’s Creek).
