Nicki Minaj is heading to ABC Family.
The Disney owned cable network has handed out a series commitment to an as-yet untitled comedy series based on Nicki Minaj’s life. The Grammy Award nominee has signed on for a starring role and will also serve as an executive producer on the comedy project.
“This is one of the more unique adventures I’ve ever embarked on”, Nicki Minaj said in a statement. “I couldn’t be more proud and excited to team up with an amazing group of people to give the world something really special.”
The untitled half-hour comedy series is based on Nicki Minaj and her family’s immigration from Trinidad in the early 1990’s. It will focus on her growing up in Queens with her vibrant family and the personal and musical evolution that led to her eventual rise to stardom. Kate Angelo penned the pilot script and will executive produce alongside Minaj, Aaron Kaplan, Stella Bulochnikov and Brian Sher (“Boss”), and Gee Roberson
“Nicki Minaj is a force to be reckoned with at everything she touches”. said Karey Burke, ABC Family’s Executive Vice President Programming and Development. “We’re beyond thrilled to bring her one-of-a-kind story to our channel. Nicki is an international superstar, yet not everyone knows how inspiring and hilarious her true story is, and we can’t wait to share it with the world.”
ABC Family has been diversifying their scripted line-up over the past few months, moving away from their typically soapier fare which is exemplified by Pretty Little Liars. Notably, the network is also prepping a TV series based on Cassie Claire’s The Mortal Instruments series of novels. That series, known as Shadowhunters, is presently in production for a 2016 premiere.
