Channel 4 Acquires German Cold War Drama ‘Deutschland 83’ For Linear Broadcast & VOD Service Walter Presents

Deutschland 83Deutschland 83 is coming to the UK.

Channel 4 has acquired the UK linear broadcast and VOD rights to the critically acclaimed German Cold War drama series after striking a deal with international distributor FremantleMedia International, TVWise has learned.

Set in the 1980s, Deutschland 83 follows Martin Rauch (Jonas Nay) as the 24-year-old East German native is pulled from the world as he knows it and sent to the West as an undercover spy for the Stasi foreign service. Hiding in plain sight in the West German army, he must gather the secrets of NATO military strategy. Everything is new, nothing is quite what it seems and everyone he encounters is harboring secrets, both political and personal.

The series will initially premiere in the UK with a linear broadcast on Channel 4 before being made available exclusively as a boxset on Walter Presents (formerly known as 4 World Drama) – the VOD service C4 is launching in partnership with Global Series Network, which aims to be the go-to destination, at least in the VOD space, for high-end foreign language drama series in the UK.

Walter Presents“With its strong characters and bold storylines, Deutschland 83 is an ideal and key series for the Walter Presents launch”, said Jamie Lynn, FremantleMedia International’s Executive Vice President and Head of Sales and Distribution for EMEA. “We’re thrilled to be working with the teams at GSN and Channel 4 to bring one of the most anticipated series of 2015 to the UK.”

Walter Presents will launch in January 2016 and will be available via Channel 4’s redesigned on-demand hub All4. The plan is for the service to eventually house more than 600 hours of foreign language drama. C4 execs will then cherry pick the cream of the crop for linear plays on Channel 4 or More4. Additionally, More4 will have a dedicated regular slot for such dramas.

“Channel 4 has steadily grown its reputation for bringing the best of world drama to the UK – from The Returned to Saboteurs”, added Channel 4’s Chief Creative Officer Jay Hunt. “The remarkable Deutschland 83 is a perfect launch for Walter presents – which will allow UK audiences to enjoy hand-picked global hits.”
