Amazon Prime Instant Video UK has secured the exclusive UK broadcast rights to USA Network’s hacker drama Mr. Robot after striking a deal with NBCUniversal International Television Distribution, TVWise has learned. The show’s ten episode first season will be available to stream for UK Prime members from Friday October 16th.
Mr. Robot follows Elliot, a programmer who suffers from a debilitating anti-social disorder and decides that he can only connect to people by hacking them. He wields his skills as a weapon to protect the people that he cares about. Elliot will find himself in the intersection between a cybersecurity firm he works for and the underworld organizations that are recruiting him to bring down corporate America. The drama series is produced by Universal Cable Productions and stars Rami Malek, Christian Slater, Portia Doubleday, Carly Chaikin and Martin Wallstrom.
This deal further highlights the deep pockets of Amazon Prime Instant Video, not to mention their ambition to secure buzzy first run US imports. As TVWise previously reported, Mr. Robot was the subject of a very aggressive bidding war involving nearly every major player in the UK, with APIV in the mix. Amazon landed the series after agreeing a large license fee and a long-running agreement with NBCU, which also gives them rights to the recently ordered second season of Mr Robot.
“We’re delighted to bring Mr. Robot exclusively to Amazon Prime members in the U.K. This is hands down one of the best and freshest shows on TV and has had critics and audiences raving around the world,” said Jason Ropell, Amazon Video Head of International Content.
This is the second time in the past year that Amazon Prime Instant Video UK has been able to fend of competition from the major UK broadcasters such as ITV, Sky and UKTV, to secure a very high-profile show, after they previously snapped up the Starz hit Outlander. Mr Robot joins a line up of first run imports on the streaming service that also includes Vikings, Crossing Lines and a wealth of AMC series such as Halt & Catch Fire and Turn: Washington’s Spies.
“Since Mr Robot’s premiere earlier this year, it has received overwhelming critical acclaim thanks to its compelling writing, superb acting and culturally relevant storylines”, added Belinda Menendez, President of NBCUniversal International Distribution. “Amazon Prime is the perfect home for this tech thriller and we’re proud to partner with them to bring the series to their audiences in the U.K., Germany and Austria”.
