Olivia Thirlby (The Wedding Ringer) has signed on for a co-starring role opposite Billy Bob Thornton in Trial, The Practice creator David E. Kelley’s newest drama project which is set up at Amazon Studios.
Penned and executive produce by David E Kelley and Jonathan Shapiro, Trial tells the story of Billy McBride (Thornton), a once powerful lawyer who was ousted from the firm he co-founded after losing a high-profile case which led to a kids death. Though an alcoholic, Billy pursues a new case which finds him going up against Cooper, the partner who kicked him out of the firm he helped build. David Semel is attached to direct the pilot.
Thirlby has been cast as Lucy Kittridge, a whip-smart, driven to succeed, high-powered attorney who knows what she wants, which is money, sex, and respect. This marks the actress’ first major television role since 2006, when she played Aubrey Cain on Kidnapped.
Trial has been on the fast-track ever since it landed at Amazon earlier this Summer. The streaming giant had put out an offer to Kevin Costner to play the lead, in what would have been his first major TV role, but the actor passed, choosing to focus on his feature career. It was after that point that Fargo breakout Billy Bob Thornton nabbed the lead role. Casting for the remaining regular roles is underway and Amazon is in the process of finalising a 10 episode straight-to-series order for the project
