Spooks and Line Of Duty star Keeley Hawes has been set as the lead in The Durells, ITV’s recently ordered six episode drama series from Simon Nye which is based on Gerald Durrell’s trilogy of Corfu memoirs.
The Durrells is set in 1935 and follows Louisa Durrell whose life is in meltdown. Her husband died years ago, the money has all but run out and her four unruly ‘children’ are going off the rails. Louisa realises she can carry on struggling or make a radical change and escape. She tells her family that she is taking them to Corfu. There is fighting and outright refusal, especially when they find out there is no electricity. But Corfu is cheap, and an untamed paradise.
Keeley Hawes, who more recently has had roles in such shows as The Casual Vacancy, The Hollow Crown and Fungus The Bogeyman, will play series lead Louisa Durrell. “I’m delighted to be playing Louisa Durrell”, she said. “As a life long fan of Gerald Durrell’s wonderful books, I can’t wait to start filming and telling his stories through Simon Nye’s hilarious and poignant adaptation.”
Rounding out the cast is Josh O’Connor (Ripper Street) as Larry, Louisa’s 21 year old son who is a would-be novelist; Daisy Waterstone (Silent Witness) as Margo, Louisa’s 17 year old daughter; Milo Parker (Mr Holmes) as Gerry, Louisa’s youngest child, Callum Woodhouse as Louisa’s 18 year old son Leslie; and Leslie Caron as Countess Mavrodaki. Yorgos Karamihos, Alexis Georgoulis & Christopher Sciueref also star.
Tommy Cooper: Not Like That, Like This scribe Simon Nye is penning the scripts for the six episode series, which is being produced by Sid Gentle Films Limited. Christopher Hall is set as the series producer, while Simon Nye, Sally Woodward Gentle and Lee Morris will executive produce. Murder On The Home Front helmer Christopher Hall is attached to direct. Production on The Durrells is slated to commence in Corfu this September for a 2016 premiere.
