Amazon Prime Instant Video UK has acquired the streaming rights to The Walking Dead spin-off Fear The Walking Dead after striking a deal with international distributor Entertainment One (eOne), TVWise has learned. The series will be available on the streaming service in 2016, following the first window broadcast on AMC UK.
Fear The Walking Dead is described “a gritty drama living in the same universe as The Walking Dead” that explores the onset of the undead apocalypse through the lens of a fractured family. Set in a city where people come to escape, shield secrets, and bury their pasts, a mysterious outbreak threatens to disrupt what little stability high school guidance counselor Madison Clark and English teacher Travis Manawa have managed to assemble. The everyday pressure of blending two families while dealing with resentful, escapist, and strung out children takes a back seat when society begins to break down. A forced evolution, a necessary survival of the fittest takes hold, and our dysfunctional family must either reinvent themselves or embrace their darker histories.
The companion series to TWD was created by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman & Dave Erickson and stars Kim Dickens as Madison, Cliff Curtis as Travis, Frank Dillane as Nick, Alycia Debnam-Carey as Alicia, Elizabeth Rodriguez as Liza, Ruben Blades as Daniel, Mercedes Mason as Ofelia and Lorenzo James Henrie as Chris.. AMC Studios is producing, with Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero, David Alpert and Dave Erickson will also serving as an executive producers. AMC has already renewed Fear The Walking Dead for a fifteen episode second season, which will air in two parts in 2016.
“Fear The Walking Dead is one of the most-anticipated shows in the world and companion to one of the most successful scripted dramas in the history of television,” said Jason Ropell, Head of International Content for Amazon Video. “We recently announced that we’re bringing Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May back together to create a hugely anticipated new motoring show exclusively for Prime members, and now we’re excited to add Fear The Walking Dead. Our goal is to add shows that Prime members love—we can’t think of two sets of shows with bigger or more passionate fan bases.”
The acquisition of Fear The Walking Dead emanates from a larger multi-territory deal between the streaming giant and eOne, which also gives Amazon streaming rights to the series in Germany and Austria. This marks the latest tie up between the two companies, who previously agreed an output deal for AMC and SundanceTV’s original series produced by AMC Studios (Fear The Walking Dead was not part of that deal as AMC retained the rights for AMC Global, their international AMC branded channel). Amazon Prime also holds exclusive streaming rights to The Walking Dead in the UK, Austria and Germany.
“The Walking Dead is a groundbreaking series that has had a significant impact on audiences worldwide”, added Stuart Baxter, President of Entertainment One Television International. “We’re delighted to continue our partnership with AMC on this immensely popular franchise to bring this highly anticipated, original series to Amazon and deliver it to audiences around the world”.
