After months of negotiations, Gérard Depardieu has officially signed on to play the lead in Marseille, Netflix’s upcoming eight episode original series which is being hailed as a tale of power, corruption and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the French port city.
Marseille tells the story of Robert Taro (Gérard Depardieu), who has been mayor of the city for 25 years. The coming elections have him facing the man he chose as his heir, an ambitious youngster aiming high. Both candidates will fight mercilessly to keep or take City Hall.
In addition to Gérard Depardieu, the cast of the eight episode series also includes Benoît Magimel (La pianiste, L’ennemi intime, La tête haute), Géraldine Pailhas (Le Garçu, L’Adversaire, Jeune et jolie), Nadia Farès (Elles n’oublient jamais, Les rivières pourpres, Nid de guêpes), Pascal Elso and Gérard Meylan.
Federation Entertainment, the Marseille based producers behind Dolmen and Sous le Soleil, is producing Marseille, which was created by Dan Franck. Pascal Breton is set to produce, while Florent-Emilio Siri and Samuel Benchetrit are attached to direct. Production is set to commence in the coming months. The series will premiere in all territories where Netflix has a presence in 2016.
