Syfy UK is bolstering their Summer line-up with a slate of Star Trek feature films. The NBCU backed channel has unveiled plans to air the first six Star Trek films, featuring the cast of the original series including William Shatner and the late Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley, from early July.
Star Trek: The Motion picture kicks off the festivities on Monday July 6th at 9pm. The next five films (The Wrath Of Khan, The Search For Spock, The Voyage Home, The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country) will follow every Monday at 9pm. All six films will then be repeated across the bank holiday weekend in late August.
The slate of Star Trek TOS feature films is also the latest element of Syfy UK’s Summer schedule to fall into place. Said schedule also includes new space-opera series Dark Matter, currently airing on Monday nights at 8pm; the second season of Dominion, which launches in the Wednesday night 9pm slot on July 15th; and the third season of Defiance, which kicks off tonight (Thursday June 25th) in the 9pm slot.
The move to air the original six Star Trek films comes only months after Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock on all three seasons of The Original Series and in eight Star Trek films, passed away from end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at his home in Bel Air.
Notably, the news also comes as production is about to get underway on the new Star Trek film (tentatively titled Star Trek Beyond). The third entry in the series of rebooted Star Trek films will see the entire principle cast, led by Chris Pine, returning, while Idris Elba has been cast as the “villain”. Justin Lin is directing the new Star Trek pic, which is slated for a July 8th 2016 release.
