Mindy lives! Hulu has swooped in and picked up a fourth season of The Mindy Project, after Fox cancelled the Mindy Kaling fronted comedy series earlier this month. The streaming service has ordered 26 episodes for the show’s fourth season, which is expected to be split into two runs.
Created by Mindy Kaling, The Mindy Project follows Dr Mindy Lahiri, a talented obstetrician with a hectic personal life, who struggles to find the right guy, the right outfit and the right attitude. Mindy shares a practice with two doctors, neither of whom makes life any easier for her. The comedy series is produced by Universal Television and stars Mindy Kaling, Ed Weeks, Chris Messina, Beth Grant, Ike Barinholtz and Adam Pally.
When Fox cancelled The Mindy Project on May 6th, word leaked out that series producer Universal Television were in talks with Hulu, who were looking to pick up the series with a 26 episode run – or what equated to a two season order in the digital landscape. With the last minute pick up, The Mindy Project will make it to 93 episodes – more than enough for Universal to sell the series in broadcast syndication. Hulu has the option to order additional seasons.
This is a smart move on Hulu’s part. The streaming service already has exclusive SVoD rights to The Mindy Project and, after their move into original series were all but declared dead last year, they have made a renewed push in that area with such efforts as 11/22/63 from JJ Abrams & WBTV, and Difficult People, from Billy Eichner. Hulu also recently nabbed the exclusive streaming rights to Seinfeld in a very rich deal with Sony Pictures Television.
“Mindy has been a beloved member of the Hulu family, so this deal is a natural extension of our relationship,” said Craig Erwich, Senior Vice President and Head of Content, Hulu. “With so many of her fans already catching up and tuning in to the series on Hulu, we know her millions of fans will be eager to find out what Mindy has in store for the next chapter.”
