Dolly Wells and Emily Mortimer’s comedy series Doll & Em is moving from its previous home on Sky Living to Sky Atlantic. The show’s six episode second season will premiere on Sky Atlantic on Wednesday June 3rd at 10:10pm.
Doll & Em’s jump to Sky Atlantic is the first such move to come out of recently announced plans to strip away Sky Living’s budget for commissions and re-locate their current slate of original series to Sky’s other channels, Sky1 or Sky Atlantic. The strategic plan, which coincided with Antonia Hurford-Jones’ exit as channel director, will see Sky Living re-focus, almost entirely, on US acquisitions.
Created by and starring Dolly Wells and Emily Mortimer, Doll & Em explores what happens when Em, a Hollywood actress, hires her childhood friend, Doll, as a personal assistant while making a film in Los Angeles. A bittersweet, intimate portrait of female friendship, the series followed their relationship through unexpected complications and surprising twists. Olivia Wilde (House), Ewan McGregor (August: Osage County), Evan Rachel Wood (True Blood) and Mikhail Baryshnikov (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit) guest star.
The second season sees the duo write an off-Broadway play together in an effort to do something creative on equal footing. They manage to hoodwink Evan Rachel Wood and Olivia Wilde into appearing in it, with Wood playing Doll and Wilde playing Em. The play is jeopardized when Em gets cast in a Hollywood action thriller opposite Ewan McGregor and threatens to abandon their passion project. Chaos ensues as Doll & Em start rewriting the play to reflect their growing frustration with each other and Wilde and Wood begin to lose faith in the production.
