It’s a Parks & Recreation reunion (of sorts)!
Former cast member Aziz Ansari has teamed up with Parks & Recreation co-creator Michael Schur and co-executive producer Alan Yang to create a new comedy series, which has landed at Netflix with a 10 episode straight-to-series order, TVWise has learned.
There are very few details available about the project, with the concept/logline being kept firmly under wraps. That said, it is understood that the cast will include Ansari, Jon Benjamin (Bob’s Burgers), Lena Waithe (The Comeback), Eric Wareheim (The Birthday Boys), Noel Wells (Saturday Night Live) and Kelvin Yu (NCIS).
Aziz Ansari, who previously worked with Netflix on a couple of stand-up specials, co-created the series alongside Alan Yang, both of whom are also penning the scripts. The duo will also serve as executive producers alongside Dave Becky, David Miner and their former boss Michael Schur on the 10 episode series, which is being produced by Universal Television. Production is currently underway in New York, with James Ponsoldt directing.
Netflix has been busy of late trying to build a healthy comedy slate, after focussing their scripted drive almost exclusively on drama since they started down the originals path in 2011 with House Of Cards.
They took in Universal TV’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt as their first live-action half-hour comedy after NBC opted not to proceed with the Ellie Kemper fronted series, while other upcoming comedies include Grace & Frankie, from Friends co-creator Marta Kaufman; and Flaked from The Millers star Will Arnett.
