Cuffs is described as a “fast-paced and adrenalin-fuelled cop show” which is both a character-led drama and a police procedural, It is set in Brighton and aims to explore the rollercoaster of being a police officer in the UK by examining the relationships between the officers and detectives and the impact that this job has on their personal lives.
The series, which has the distinction of being the first drama commissioned for BBC One’s 8pm weekday time-slot in close to a decade, has received an order for 8 hour-long episodes and is being produced by the Shine Endemol owned indie Tiger Aspect Productions.
Secret Diary Of A Call Girl and Prisoner’s Wives scribe Julie Gearey created Cuffs and is penning the scripts. She will also serve as an executive producer alongside Tiger Aspect’s Head of Drama Will Gould and the BBC’s Head of Independent Drama Poly Hill. Trevor Hopkins is the series producer, while Iona Vrolyk will co-executive produce. Production begins this Friday in Brighton, Shoreham and the surrounding area.
“We are thrilled to start filming Cuffs. With her incredible wit, authenticity and balls-out storytelling – Julie Gearey is taking the cop show genre back to basics to create a fresh and bold series, bang up to date for 2015”, said Will Gould. “And we can’t wait for her vision to be brought to life by director Anthony Philipson and our extraordinarily talented and diverse cast.”
