HBO is getting into business with Jenji Kohan.
The premium cable network has handed out a pilot order to New World, an hour-long drama project set at the time of the Salem witch trials from Orange Is The New Black creator Jenji Kohan and Good Will Hunting helmer Gus Van Sant, TVWise has learned.
New World is described as a provocative period drama that explores the circumstances around one of the most compelling chapters in American history: when intolerance and repression set neighbor against neighbor and led a town to mass hysteria.
Jenji Kohan, who created Showtime’s Weeds, is penning the script alongside Bruce Miller and Tracy Miller. The project, which initially landed at HBO back in 2013, is a co-production between HBO Originals and Lionsgate Television, with Kohan and Bruce Miller serving as executive producers.
Noted helmer Gus Van Sant has also boarded the project and is set to executive produce and direct the pilot, which is set to enter production in Massachusetts this Spring. New World is a rare TV project for Van Sant, whose only other television credit is the short-lived Starz series Boss, also produced by Lionsgate Television.
