Call The Midwife is almost back.
Contrary to some reports you may have seen in the papers, the BBC’s line up this Christmas does not consist of mainly repeats. One of the many new entries this festive season is a feature length special episode of hit period drama Call The Midwife, the first look trailer for which has now debuted online.
Call The Midwife is based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, who was a district midwife in London’s east end during the 1950′s and stars Jenny Agutter, Pam Ferris, Miranda Hart, Judy Parfitt, Helen George, Bryony Hannah, Laura Main and Cliff Paris. The special and the upcoming fourth season will be the first not to feature Jessica Raine, who exited the show at the end of last season. BBC One has already ordered a fifth season and a further Christmas special in 2015.
The special opens in 2005, with Jennifer Worth (Vanessa Redgrave) at home preparing for Christmas with husband Philip. Before long she starts to reminisces about her youth at Nonnatus House and the episode cuts back to 1960. Rehearsals are underway for the Sunday School Christmas Concert, and while Chummy tries to choreograph dancing snowflakes, Trixie sets to work designing a Father Christmas outfit for Fred to wear. Meanwhile, Chummy is enlisted to help run a poorly managed Mother And Baby home, and with Patsy’s help succeeds in bringing some Christmas joy into the residents’ lives.
