Idris Elba is racing to Discovery.
The award winning actor, who is set to reprise his iconic role as DCI John Luther in a pair of new episodes for BBC One, is to topline and produce a new racing series for Discovery Channel, TVWise has learned.
The Idris Elba Project will see Elba take on the toughest racing challenges, from rally driving, street racing, aerobatics and power boating; with the aim of not only mastering the various disciplines but understanding the engineering, science and history behind them. Elba will meet various people in the series, from professionals to speed freaks, who will both inspire and guide him along the way.
“I’m taking on the toughest racing challenges of my life for this new Discovery TV series”, said Idris Elba. “Along the way I’ll meet extraordinary individuals, spectacular machines and hear amazing stories of how far people go to satisfy their love of speed. The extreme challenges will take me right out of my comfort zone as I compete against the best on land, water and in the air.”
Commissioned by Discovery Networks International’s Vice-President of Production and Development for Factual Elizabeth McIntyre, the series has received a four episode order and will air on the Discovery Channel in more than 220 countries, including the US and the UK. Shine North and Elba’s indie Green Door Pictures will produce, with Rick Murray and Victoria Noble serving as executive producers.
“This landmark series will take viewers on a journey with Idris to experience the adrenalin rush and thrill of speed, a passion for him and our audience”, added Susanna Dinnage, Executive Vice-President & Managing Director of Discovery Networks UK & Ireland. “The series embodies Discovery Channel’s ‘Make Your World Bigger’ brand promise and will go behind the scenes to take viewers to the heart of Idris’ adventure.”
