'Luther' Remake In The Works At Fox – TVWise

Fox is plotting a remake of another popular British crime drama.
The network, who are in the middle of airing their adaptation of Broadchurch (titled Gracepoint), has put in development a US adaptation of the BBC series Luther, which hails from original series creator Neil Cross and star Idris Elba, TVWise has learned.
Luther aired three seasons and 14 episodes on BBC One before coming to a close. It centered on Detective Chief Investigator John Luther (Idris Elba), a near-genius detective struggling to cope with his own demons as he investigates major crimes for the Metropolitan Police Service.
Despite Neil Cross’ decision to end the original series, there has been talk of Elba reprising the role in a feature film and BBC drama execs have, off and on, considered a spin-off following the Alice Morgan character.
The US adaptation, which landed at Fox with a hefty put pilot commitment, hails from 20th Century Fox TV, Chernin Entertainment and BBC Worldwide Productions and is being penned by Cross. The executive producers are Neil Cross, Idiris Elba, Peter Chernin, Katherine Pope, Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner.
Fox’s decision to hand out a put pilot commitment to Luther suggests they have not soured on UK productions as source material, despite the fact that they have had little to no success with adapting British series. Gracepoint, while still on the air, has been pulling in disappointing ratings; and the network’s adaptation of Gavin & Stacey, titled Us & Them, was quickly cancelled last year and never saw the light of day.
