First Look: BBC One’s Adaptation Of J.K. Rowling’s ‘The Casual Vacancy’

BBC One has unveiled a first look image from their upcoming adaptation of the J.K. Rowling novel The Casual Vacancy.

Set to air in 2015, The Casual Vacancy centres on Pagford, a seemingly idyllic English village with a cobbled market square and ancient abbey. Behind the pretty façade, however, is a town at war: rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils. The series is based on novel of the same name which, since its initial publication in 2012, has sold more than 6 million copies worldwide.

The series, which is being co-produced by US premium cable network HBO, runs three episodes and features an all star cast which includes Michael Gambon (Harry Potter), Keeley Hawes (Line of Duty), Julia McKenzie (Notes On A Scandal), Rufus Jones (W1A), Rory Kinnear (Penny Dreadful), Keeley Forsyth (Coronation Street), Abigail Lawrie, Monica Dolan (Sightseers), Simon McBurney (Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy), Richard Glover (A Field In England), Marie Critchley (In The Flesh)  and Michelle Austin (Secrets & Lies).

This first teaser image show’s Marple star Julia McKenzie and Line of Duty & Spooks alum Keeley Hawes in character as Shirley Mollison and Samantha Mollison, respectively.
