Katie Holmes is to reprise her role as Jackie O in The Kennedys-After Camelot, Reelz’s follow up to the 2011 miniseries The Kennedys.
Based on J. Randy Taraborrelli’s book After Camelot: A Personal History of the Kennedy Family 1968 to the Presnt, After Camelot, which has received greenlight as a four-hour miniseries, will pick up from the assassination of RFK in 1968 and continue to tell the on-going saga of America’s most famous and controversial family.
Muse Entertainment, who produced the 2011 mini, are reteaming with Reelz for After Camelot. It is being adapted for the screen by Stephen Kronish. In addition to starring, Katie Holmes will also direct one episode. The remaining three will be helmed by Jon Cassar, who directed every episode of The Kennedys. The executive producers are Stephen Kronish, Jon Cassar, Katie Holmes and Keri Selig. Production begins in Canada in Spring 2015 for a 2016 premiere on Reelz.
“Our miniseries ‘The Kennedys’ was a ratings hit all over the world and we expect ‘After Camelot’ to also be very well received”, said Michael Prupas, President and CEO of Muse Entertainment. “The Kennedy family made a lasting mark on America and the world even after John and Robert Kennedy’s assassinations by championing universal healthcare and by creating the Special Olympics and by continuing to act as international ambassadors for many other worthy causes.”
When it debuted in 2011 The Kennedys was an unlikely hit on Reelz, which kick-started the network’s push into scripted. The 8 hour mini had originally been developed and produced for A+E’s History network, but they pulled the plug in early 2011 after the Kennedy family exerted a fair amount of political pressure on the network to abandon the drama.
Reelz subsequently acquired it and after airing all 8 episodes to decent ratings, The Kennedys racked up 18 Emmy Nominations and four wins. It was the following year, in 2012, that Reelz put After Camelot into development, after the project was brought to them by Intuition Productions President Keri Selig, who serves as an executive producer. Muse International will handle global distribution on After Camelot.
