Drunk History is getting the British treatment.
Comedy Central UK has ordered a pilot for a UK adaptation of the US comedy series, which airs state-side on their sister network Comedy Central, TVWise has learned.
Drunk History features two comedians getting very drunk in order to tell a true historical story they are passionate about. As they narrate these stories, slurred word for slurred word, a host of well-known actors, celebrities and other comedians act out these new, rather blurry versions of history.
The format was devised by Derek Waters & Jeremy Konner and has aired two seasons on the US Comedy Central network, with a third in the pipeline. The UK pilot, which has now commenced production, will feature Dustin Demri-Burns, Tom Rosenthal, Mat Horne and Rob Beckett, with Jimmy Carr providing the voice-over.
“I am thrilled that we have commissioned a UK pilot for Drunk History”, said Lourdes Diaz, Vice-President & Head of Global Production and Development for Comedy Central International. “The show is already a smash hit in the US and I’m sure our UK audience will love this local version too! I can’t wait to see some of our most loved comedians attempt to recall some of history’s greatest moments in a totally inebriated state.”
Endemol owned indie Tiger Aspect Productions, who are behind such series as Bad Education and My Mad Fat Diary, is producing Drunk History UK. Ben Rogers is set as the producer, while Jill Offman, Lourdes Diaz, Joe McVey and Andy Brereton will executive produce. Tom McKay is attached to direct.
“They say history is written by the winners, but on this show it’s written by the wasted”, added Andy Brereton, Tiger Aspect’s Head of Comedy and Entertainment. “It’s an absolute honour to be making Drunk History for Comedy Central. I’m sure my history teacher will be very proud, as will the landlord at my local pub.”
