BBC One has renewed Kay Mellor’s latest drama series In The Club for a six episode second season, TVWise has learned.

In The Club follows six very different couples, who’ve bonded at the local Parent Craft class in the last trimester of their pregnancies. This seemingly straightforward antenatal group reveals secrets and lies bubbling beneath the surface that threaten each of the new families. In sharing the most intimate of experiences, they are shown how dreams can change in an instant and form a life-long bond and friendship. Each of the couples has their own unique issues to deal with, be it swollen feet, chronic wind or Braxton Hicks alongside debt, divorce and even death.

The drama series, which was created by prolific producer Kay Mellor, premiered earlier this year to strong overnight ratings, peaking at 5 million viewers. Mellor’s production company Rollem Productions produces In The Club, which stars Hermione Norris, Tara Fitzgerald, Jill Halfpenny, Katherine Parkinson, Will Mellor, Jonathan Kerrigan, Christine Bottomley, Luke Thompson, Taj Atwal, Sacha Dhawan and newcomer Hannah Midgley.

“BBC One viewers really took the characters to their hearts and it was exciting to see the show build across the six episodes”, said BBC One Controller Charlotte Moore who commissioned the second season alongside the BBC’s Controller of Drama Commissioning Ben Stephenson. “Kay Mellor’s story about a group of pregnant women celebrated life in all its joy and tragedy and I’m looking forward to the delivery of series two.”

While series creator and executive producer Kay Mellor added: “I’m absolutely delighted for Rollem to be commissioned to produce a second series of In the Club for BBC One. On a personal note, the whole experience from script to screen was such a positive one for me. It’s going to be a bit of a juggling process as I’d love to bring all the characters back but I also want to introduce some new stories. One thing’s for sure, I can’t wait to start the whole process again.”
