FOX UK has sealed a deal with Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution to acquire the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to FX’s geopolitical drama series Tyrant.
Tyrant tells the story of Bassam “Barry” Al Fayeed, the younger son of the dictator of a war-torn nation, who ends a self-imposed 20-year exile to return to his homeland, accompanied by his American wife and children, for his nephew’s wedding. Barry’s reluctant homecoming leads to a dramatic clash of cultures as he is thrown back into the familial and national politics of his youth.
The drama series, which is set to premiere on FOX UK this September, hails from Homeland‘s Gideon Raff & Howard Gordon and has been described by FOX UK’s Cecelia Beacon as “the perfect addition to our Autumn line up”. Fox 21 and FX Productions produces Tyrant, which stars Adam Rayner, Jennifer Finnigan, Ashraf Barhom, Moran Atias, Noah Silver, Anne Winters, Fares Fares, Salim Daw, Justin Kirk, Jordana Spiro, Mehdi Dehbi, and Alice Krige.
This marks the first high profile US series that FOX UK has acquired since the LA Screenings. The pay TV channel has been on the hunt for a number of series to replace the outgoing Burn Notice, True Blood, Mob City and Men At Work, all of which have, or are about to, wrapped their runs on the channel. Prior to the screenings, FOX UK acquired the event series Wayward Pines, which is slated to premiere in 2015.
“Topical and relevant, Tyrant is an engrossing political series”, Toby Etheridge, Head of Programming & Scheduling for Fox International Channels UK. “At its heart a family drama, Tyrant is fascinating and well-made, and everything you would expect from the makers of Homeland and 24, and the broadcaster that brought us Fargo, Louie and American Horror Story. “
For Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution’s part, Tyrant becomes the second FX series they have sold to a UK broadcaster in the past few weeks. The international distributor also recently lined up a UK deal for The Strain – the vampire drama from Carlton Cuse and Guillermo del Toro – with UKTV, who will air the series on their Watch channel.
“Tyrant, which is set in a fictional nation in the Middle East is a thrilling and dramatic family saga on a grand scale”, added Steve Cornish, SVP and Managing Director of Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution. “It is international TV at its very best. Lead by Brit Adam Rayner, it features an amazing cast from the Middle East, Africa, Europe and the US.”
