CSI: Crime Scene Investigation airs its 300th episode on Channel 5 tonight at 9pm and sees the return of a fan favourite character.
Marg Helgenberger, who played Catherine Willows on the first twelve seasons of the show, returns for a guest appearance in the 300th episode, in which the team investigates a 14 year old cold case. In addition to Helgenberger’s comeback, the episode also features guest appearances from Beverly Hills 90210‘s Jason Priestly and One Tree Hill‘s Bethany Joy Lenz.
At the time that the episode was filmed (and originally aired in the US) Helgenberger, who was starring on the late CBS series Intelligence, was welcomed back by the CSI cast members with open arms. “She is a huge reason why the show is celebrating 300 episodes, so to have her back is like perfect”, noted Ted Danson. While Jorja Fox said: “It just feels like being home to have her here, you know. I didn’t even blink…she walked into the makeup trailer this morning and it just felt very, very right.”
The re-appearance of the Catherine Willows character was made possible in the 300th episode by a series of flashbacks, which show the original murder investigation in 2000. “They discover a man who they could not prove had killed this young girl because they couldn’t find the body, but they were convinced that he had done it. And 14 years later, the same man is involved in a murder of a young girl in his house in Vegas and he is a very wealthy man and so it brings up a lot of the guy who got away”, said Ted Danson. “Sara is still very angry that he got away. A lot of the characters are. So it gives a chance for Marg to come back and participate in the 300th episode in a flashback-like manner.”
A chance that Marg Helgenberger was more than happy to jump at; noting that it “feels great” to be welcomed back for the 300th episode. “Seeing everybody and even George the security guard, George, going through Gate 2, it’s great to see him and everybody in wardrobe. I mean, you know, it just was my second family, so it’s good to, you know – some of whom I have been back to visit, but to actually be Catherine Willows is, you know, a whole other experience.”
