Veteran actor Sam Kelly has passed away aged 70 after a long battle with cancer.
Sam Kelly had been suffering from cancer from some time and had recently been forced to withdraw from his role on the West End production Wicked due to his ill health. According to BBC news, Kelly’s agent Lynda Ronan said: “He does not leave any family but a host of friends who were his chosen family.”
Born in 1943, Kelly enjoyed a long and distibguished career both on stage as well as in film and television. He is best known to audiences for his role as Hans Geering on the BBC sitcom ‘Allo ‘Allo!. He also had a recurring role on Porridge and recently appeared in UKTV’s retrospective, Porridge: Inside Out (pictured). His other comedy roles included My Family, One The Up, Barbara, Black Books and Outnumbered.
In addition to his better known comedy roles, Kelly took on a great many dramatic roles over the years. His most recent was as John Merdell in Dead Man’s Folly – one of the final episodes of Agatha Christie’s Poirot. Over the years he appeared on countless dramas including Crown Court, Where The Heart Is, Doctors, The Bill, New Tricks and Heartbeat.
