Lifetime has teamed with Stephen King for a TV movie adaptation of his novella Big Driver, which will be headlined by former Prime Suspect star Mario Bello.
Big Driver follows Tess Thorne, a famous thriller writer, who faces a long drive home following a book signing engagement. Prompted to take a shortcut at the suggestion of the event’s planner, Ramona, Tess sets out to return to her house. But while driving on a lonely stretch of New England road, her tire blows out, leaving her stranded.
Relieved when another driver stops and offers assistance, Tess quickly discovers her saviour is actually her assailant, a serial killer who repeatedly assaults her. With her fragile mind beginning to unravel, she is determined to find her rapist and seek revenge, as payback is the only thing holding her together.
The adaptation is being penned by Happy Face Killer scribe Richard Christian Matheson and marks the first collaboration between Stephen King and Lifetime. In addition to Mario Bello, who plays lead character Tess Thorne, Big Driver also stars Olympia Dukakis as Doreen; Joan Jett as Betsy Neal; and Will Harris as the serial killer who assaults Tess.
Ostar Productions is producing the TV movie, with Bill Haber & Jeffrey Hayes serving as executive producers, while Drew Peterson: Untouchable helmer Mikael Salomon is attached to direct. Production on Big Driver begins this Summer in Halifax, Nova Scotia for a Fall premiere.
