Comedy Central UK and Russell Howard have inked a “substantial” deal which will see the comedian front two new series for the multi-channel broadcaster.
One such series will focus on Howard’s stand up and will see him performing exclusive material and introduce two additional acts per episode. Comedy Central has commissioned 10 episodes, which are set to enter production in Camden later this year for a 2015 broadcast.
The second series is described as an “adventure comedy” which will follow Russel Howard on his next international tour and feature BTS footage of the comedian while he is on the road. This commission has received a two year pick up, split across two six episode seasons, which will begin production in 2016. Comedy Central UK said that the first season would follow Howard on his “biggest state-side tour to date”.
“I’m massively looking forward to these shows with Comedy Central. Should be a hoot”, said Russell Howard.
In addition to the two new series, both of which are being produced by Avalon, Comedy Central UK has acquired the Pay TV rights to all ten seasons of Howard’s BBC series Russell Howard’s Good News, which was just bumped up to BBC Two after airing 8 seasons on BBC Three, and four or Russel Howard’s stand up specials.
“Ever since I saw Russell Howard’s live stand up show five years ago, it has been my dream to get him on Comedy Central. The whole team loves his work and he has massive appeal with our audience”, said Jill Offman, MD of Comedy Central UK & SVP of Comedy for Viacom International Media Networks. “To be able to broadcast his work across several genres: an exclusive stand-up series from here in Camden, comedy travelogues, his popular stand-up and the library for Russell Howard’s Good News is great news for us and our viewers, plus it further demonstrates our commitment to UK content.”
