BBC One’s one-off drama Common will premiere on Sunday July 6th at 9pm, it has been announced.
Common explores the potential injustice of the Joint Enterprise or Common Purpose law and tells the story of four young men who, in sheer panic, quickly flee from the scene of a fatal stabbing. The lives of theses four young men, the lives of those they love and the lives of the victim’s family will never be the same again. The drama focuses on how the so called Joint Enterprise or Common Purpose law suggests that the prosecution do not need to prove that the defendant knew that a violent crime was about to occur, the fact that they had knowledge or foresight of another person’s intent, or were present and failed to stop it.
The one off drama was written by Jimmy McGovern and was originally commissioned by then BBC One Controller Danny Cohen and the BBC’s Controller of Drama Commissioning Ben Stephenson in October 2012. The 90 minute film was produced by LA Productions and stars Daniel Mays (Mrs Biggs), Susan Lynch (Monroe), Jodhi May (The Ice Cream Girls), Andrew Tiernan (Prisoners’ Wives), Nico Mirallegro (The Village), Robert Pugh (Game of Thrones), Philip Hill-Pearson (Good Cop), Ben Smith (Hidden), Andrew Ellis (This Is England ’86), Harry McMullen, Michelle Farley (Game Of Thrones), Jack McMullen (Waterloo Road) and Sir Michael Gambon (Harry Potter).
