History’s scripted series Vikings has gone on to become the most watched TV series of all time on Amazon Prime Instant Video, who hold first run rights to the MGM distributed drama in the UK.
Created by Michael Hirst, Vikings follows Ragnar, a restless young warrior and family man who longs to find and conquer new lands across the sea and claim the spoils as his own. The drama series stars Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment), Travis Fimmel (The Beast), Jessalyn Gilsig (Glee), Gustaf Skarsgard (The Way Back), Clive Standen (Camelot), Katheryn Winnick (Stand Up Guys), Donal Logue (Sons of Anarchy), Alexander Ludwig (The Hunger Games) and Linus Roache (Law & Order).
Amazon (then LOVEFiLM) initially acquired exclusive UK rights to Vikings from MGM back in 2013 and released the complete first season on May 24th. For the show’s second season, the streaming service used a day-and-date release strategy: releasing new episodes within 24 hours of their broadcast in the United States; a tactic which members responded well to.
Like Netflix, Amazon does not release specific ratings data but the streaming arm of the e-commerce giant noted that the strong demand for the season two finale had helped push Vikings over the top to become their top rated television series of all time. The news of the strong figures also come just as Vikings has landed at a linear broadcaster, with History UK currently airing the show’s 9 episode first season.
“The way in which we watch TV has changed”, said Tim Leslie, Vice President of Amazon Prime Instant Video. “Our customers want to watch great TV shows at their convenience. VIKINGS was the first of many critically-acclaimed TV shows we brought to the UK before traditional broadcasters and the fact that it is the most watched content on our service will give producers of quality content even more reason to launch on services like ours rather than terrestrial channels”.
