EXCLUSIVE: From the higher echelons of the ever political PSNI (Police Service of Northern Ireland) to CIA case officer? One of my sources is telling me that the indefatigable Irish actor John Lynch (The Fall) has landed a “significant” role on ABC’s 8 episode limited event series The Assets, which recounts the true stories from CIA officers about the conclusion of the Cold War. Production on the series is currently underway in Lithuania, with ABC eyeing a 2014 premiere.
Exact details of Lynch’s character are being kept under wraps and it should be noted that this is coming from one source and as I’ve been unable to confirm the news its should be treated as rumour for now. That said, I’ve heard from another source that the low-budget series, which is being produced by ABC News, has a large roster of non-US actors attached, in part due to budget, and that its is being primarily filmed outside of the United States for that same reason.
ABC ordered The Assets back in July after network president Paul Lee had made a commitment at ABC’s upfront to produce more limited series, which is a growing trend amongst the big 4 networks at the moment. The limited series is based on the book Circle of Treason: A CIA Account of Traitor Aldrich Ames and the Men He Betrayed by CIA officers Sandra Grimes and the late Jeanne Vertefeuille, who headed the agency’s counter-intelligence investigation which identified Aldrich Ames as a mole who had blown the cover of at least ten Soviet intelligence officers who were working for the company and, the investigation claimed, dozens more assets across the world. ABC News’ Lincoln Square Productions are producing the drama with Morgan Hertzan, Rudy Bednar and Andrew Chapman serving as executive producers. The directors are Peter Medak, Trygve Diesen and Jeff T. Thomas.
