Lifetime has renewed Drop Dead Diva for a sixth season of 13 episodes which is set to air next Summer, TVWise has confirmed.
Created by Josh Berman, Drop Dead Diva follows the beautiful-but-vapid model wannabe Deb, who suddenly finds herself in front of Heaven’s gatekeeper following a fatal car crash. Outraged by her sudden demise, she attempts to persuade Fred to return her to her shallow existence but is accidentally relegated to the body of the recently deceased Jane Bingum. An intelligent, thoughtful and plus-size attorney with a loyal assistant, Teri, Jane has always lived in the shadow of her colleagues whereas Deb has always relied on her external beauty. By a twist of fate and a bolt of divine intervention, Deb must come to terms with inhabiting Jane’s curvier frame and learn to reconcile her beauty queen ways with her brilliant, new mind. The drama series is produced by Sony Pictures Television and stars Brooke Elliot, Margaret Cho, April Bowlby, Jackson Hurst, Kate Levering, Josh Stamberg and Ben Feldman.
The news of the renewal, which was first reported by EW, comes after Drop Dead Diva was initially cancelled at the end of its fourth season only to swing a fifth season renewal when series producer Sony Pictures Television was able to work out “creative financing” with Lifetime. It also comes at a time of change for the network on the scripted side. Lifetime recently cancelled landmark series Army Wives after seven seasons and renewed freshman series Devious Maids, following its strong ratings performance. The network’s other original scripted series Witches Of East End has also been performing well and as such is also expected to swing a second season renewal.
