Channel 5 has closed a deal with Muse Distribution International to acquire the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to the Canadian drama series Played, which premieres tonight on CTV in Canada.

Created by Greg Nelson, Played follows the Covert Investigations Unit (CIU), an elite Toronto-based undercover police unit formed to infiltrate criminal worlds, as they take on a new case and target each week. The drama series is produced by Muse Entertainment and Back Alley Films and stars Vincent Walsh, Chandra West, Lisa Marcos, Dawn Murphy, Agam Darshi and Adam Butcher.

“Channel 5 has always been a home for smart, sassy crime procedural drama”, said Sebastian Cardwell, Acquisitions Manager at Channel 5. “Played is no exception, and we’re sure it’ll be a favourite with our audience.”

While Muse Entertainment’s President Michael Prupas added: “Muse is delighted to have Channel 5 its broadcast partner in the UK. Its reach in that market is very deep and its audience fits perfectly with the smart contemporary show that Played represents.”

With this deal between C5 and Muse, Played becomes the latest scripted series to be acquired for UK broadcast by Channel 5. The broadcaster also recently inked deals to pick up ABC’s Betrayal from Disney Media Distribution, the second season of Wentworth from FremantleMedia International, as well as the new seasons of top performing imports CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Mentalist and Person of Interest. The pick up of the series also comes just as Muse is preparing to launch the series to international buyers at MIPCOM next week.
