ABC has handed a full-season order to one of the breakout hits of the 2013-2014 season – Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The back nine order brings the total number of episodes ordered for the show’s first season to 22.
The full season pick up had been expected for some time given that the series currently ranks as the #1 new series of the 2013-2014 season. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered on Tuesday September 24th to 12.1 million viewers and a 4.7 A18-49 rating and despite having since slipped in the ratings, with the most recent episode pulling in 7.9 million viewers and a 2.9 rating in the A18-49 demo, the series is still a top performer for ABC.
With the back nine order, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is the latest new entry from the 2013-2014 season to earn a pick up, joining NBC’s The Blacklist, which has also received a back nine order; and Fox’s Sleepy Hollow, which has already been renewed for a 13 episode second season. Other freshman series have not fared as well, with ABC’s Lucky 7, Fox’s Murder Police and CBS’ We Are Men having already been cancelled.
