Graham McTavish (24) and Gary Lewis (Gangs of New York) have joined the cast of Starz’s upcoming 16 episode drama series Outlander. They join a cast which is being led by fellow Scot Sam Heughan, with Tobias Menzes taking on dual roles on the series.
McTavish has been cast as Dougal MacKenzie, the War Chieftain of Clan MacKenzie. His is a skilled and experienced warrior who unlike his brother secretly supports the rebel cause against the British. While Lewis has been cast as Colum MacKenzie, the ruling Laird of Clan MacKenzie and Jamie’s maternal uncle. He is a man who reigns over a powerful clan, but must rely on Dougal to be the true muscle.
Based on the series of novels by Diana Gabaldon and developed for television by Battlestar Galactica‘s Ron Moore, Outlander spans the genres of romance, science fiction, history, and adventure in one grandiose tale. It follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, where she is immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. When she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate affair is ignited that tears Claire’s heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives. The drama series is being produced by Tall Ship Productions, Story Mining & Supply Company and Left Bank Pictures in association with Sony Pictures Television. The executive producers are Ronald D. Moore and Jim Kohlberg. Sony Pictures Television is handling global distribution.
