AMC has cancelled The Killing after airing three seasons of the drama series, TVWise has learned.
Based on the Danish series Forbrydelsen, The Killing was developed for American television by Veena Sud and followed a police investigation into a high profile murder case in Seattle . The drama series was produced by Fox Television Studios and starred Mireille Enos, Billy Campbell, Joel Kinnaman, Peter Sarsgaard, Elias Koteas and Amy Seimetz. The show’s third season was set a year after closing the Rosie Larsen case with Sarah Linden no longer serving a detective. But when her ex-partner Stephen Holder’s search for a runaway girl leads him to discover a gruesome string of murders that connects to a previous murder investigation by Linden, she is drawn back into the life she thought she’d left behind.
This marks the second time that AMC has cancelled the series. The network initially cancelled The Killing last year after suffering a decline in the ratings before a deal between series producer Fox Television Studios, AMC and Netflix saw the series return for a third season. The ratings for the show’s third season, however, were more or less flat with last season, making the future of the series far from certain.
In a statement announcing the cancellation, AMC said: “We have made the difficult decision not to move forward with a fourth season of The Killing. We want to thank our great partners at Fox Television Studios, creator Veena Sud, an extraordinary cast and the dedicated fans who watched.”
While series producer Fox Television Studios added: “Fox Television Studios is extremely proud of all three seasons of The Killing. We’re especially gratified to have orchestrated a unique deal with AMC for season three that included a bold partnership with Netflix. While we would have loved to produce a fourth season for AMC, FTVS is immensely grateful to everyone involved with this moving series: our brilliant cast, led by Mireille Enos, Joel Kinnaman and season three’s Peter Sarsgaard, our stellar executive producer, Veena Sud, a remarkable writing and producing team, and a tireless, dedicated crew. Most of all, FTVS thanks the terrific fans of The Killing, who communicated their appreciation for the show throughout its run.”
