Channel 5 has closed a deal with Disney Media Distribution (DMD) to acquire the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to ABC’s drama series Betrayal. The series, which premieres state-side on September 29th, is expected to premiere on Channel 5 later this year, closely behind its US debut.

Created by David Zabel, Betrayal follows a beautiful but unhappily married female photographer who begins a torrid affair with a lawyer for a powerful family. When he turns out to be defending a murder suspect who is being prosecuted by her husband, the relationship and the case begin a spiraling series of betrayals with cataclysmic results for everyone involved. The drama series is produced by ABC Studios and stars Hannah Ware, Stuart Townsend, Chris Johnson, Henry Thomas, James Cromwell and Wendy Moniz.

With Channel 5’s deal with DMD, Betrayal becomes the sixth series from the upcoming 2013-2014 season to score a UK sale. Other recent deals include Sky Living’s acquisition of NBC’s The Blacklist, Channel 4’s acquisition of Hostages & Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and E4’s acquisition of The 100 and The Tomorrow People. This also marks DMD’s second sale of the season to a UK broadcaster, following on from the sale of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and comes after the distributor had a particularly tough time in the UK market last season, when they sold only one of the six series they were distributing.

“We have high hopes for Betrayal becoming an unmissable drama event for Channel 5 viewers. The themes of sex, love, loyalty and treachery all combine to make this a compelling and gripping drama”, said Katie Keenan, Channel 5’s Head of Acquisitions.

While Dayna Donaldson, Executive Director of Media distribution for Disney UK & Ireland, added: “This hot new drama will be sure to have viewers on the edge of their seats at all times as they watch Sara and Jack’s affair develop whilst being on opposite sides of a murder investigation. Channel 5 is the perfect U.K. home for Betrayal.”
