Channel 4 has sealed a deal with Disney Media Distribution to acquire the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to ABC’s Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. The drama series will debut on Channel 4 this Autumn, closely behind Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s premiere state-side on ABC.
Penned by Joss Whedon, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. follows the daily activities of the intelligence agency knows as Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistic Directorate (S.H.I.E.L.D.), which has appeared in numerous Marvel comics and feature films. The cast includes Ming-Na, Clark Gregg, Brett Dalton, Elizabeth Henstridge, Ian De Caestecker and Chloe Bennet. ABC Studios and Marvel TV are producing, with Whedon, Jeph Loeb, Jeffrey Bell, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen serving as executive producers.
The acquisition of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D comes after Channel 4 also inked a deal with Warner Bros. International Television Distribution to acquire CBS’ drama series Hostages for their flagship channel and The CW’s drama series The 100 and The Tomorrow People. The deal for S.H.I.E.L.D. also comes after what is being described as a heated bidding war between Channel 4 and at least 2 other UK broadcasters for the series.
“Like the Super Hero universe from which it has come, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” is big, bold and absolutely exhilarating”, said Channel 4’s Chief Creative Officer Jay Hunt. “Featuring the production values you’d expect from Marvel and ABC Studios, this is family entertainment at its most exciting.”
While Catherine Powell, Senior Vice-President & General Manager of Disney Media Distribution for EMEA, added: “This stand-out series has universal appeal with the excitement and thrilling action we have come to expect from Marvel, brought to life by a superb cast playing fantastic characters. It’s terrific news for viewers that “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” is launching on Channel 4.”
