EXCLUSIVE: Sky Living’s just announced drama Lawless has added a pair of actors to its cast. My sources are telling me that Wendy Nottingham (The Borgias) and Terrence Harvey (Jo) have been cast in the drama. They join previously announced main cast members Suranne Jones (Scott & Bailey), Jonathan Cake (Desperate Housewives), Chris Coghill (Eastenders) and Lindsay Duncan (Doctor Who). I’m also told that Malachi Kirby (Way To Go), Pervez Qadir (Spooks: Code 9) and Lamin Tamba have all filmed guest roles on Lawless.
Created by Jacquetta May, Lawless offers a backstage pass into the inner workings of a modern court from the cells in the basement to the judge’s chambers. The drama follows a brand new judge (Suranne Jones) battling to keep her head above the water in the murky depths of the justice system. Lawless is being produced by Twenty Twenty and stars Suranne Jones, Jonathan Cake, Chris Coghill and Lindsay Duncan. Katherine Lannon is serving as the producer, with Sky’s Head of Drama Anne Mensah serving as the executive producer. The pilot was directed by Mr Selfridge helmer Jon Jones.
Lawless is one of five potential new drama series which are being piloted as part of Sky Living’s Drama Matters. This strand is in the same vein as the channel’s previously announced Love Matters and Sky1′s Little Crackers and will showcase a number of one-off dramas that are also serving as backdoor pilots. Such strands are considered an effective way of piloting potential new series and has thus far led to a full series order for Moone Boy, Sky1′s sitcom which was initially piloted as an episode of Little Crackers.
